Full Registration (FR) with a licence to practise in the UK:

FULL REGISTRATION is needed for any UNSUPERVISED MEDICAL PRACTICE in the NHS or private practice in the UK.

Generally speaking, doctors who have undertaken a satisfactory period of experience under Provisional Registration (PR) may apply for Full Registration (FR).

Having qualified and completed an internship outside the UK:

  • Some doctors may be eligible to apply directly for FR.
  • Some others, unless they are directly eligible for entry onto the Specialist or GP Registers, or on the contrary MUST pass the PLAB tests , might be required to work within an approved practice setting. This means that these will only be able to work in settings that have been approved by the General Medical Council as having sufficiently supportive and quality assurance systems aimed at improving quality in place.

OR
Provisional Registration (PR) with a licence to practise...

Provisional Registration (PR) with a licence to practise allows newly qualified doctors to undertake the general clinical training needed for full registration.

A doctor who is provisionally registered is entitled to work only in Foundation Year 1 (F1) posts in hospitals or institutions that are approved for the purpose.

Note : Some Doctors who have qualified in an EEA member state might have to apply to do their practical training (12 month internship) in the UK.

Caution: The GMC does not register graduates who have been awarded primary medical qualifications at private, UK-based medical colleges such as European College of Medicine, London (ECM), Grace University School of Medicine, London College of Medicine, London School of Medicine, London Medical School, School of Health and Neural Sciences (Nottingham), American International School of Medicine, St. Christopher's College of Medicine (Luton), Kigezi International School of Medicine (Cambridge), Medical College London (Montserrat) that claim that the course of study undertaken substantially or wholly in the UK leads to a primary medical qualification awarded by an overseas University.

The purpose of the UK 12 month Internship:

The purpose of the Foundation Programme year 1 (F1) is to enable you to show you are ready to accept with confidence either the duties and responsibilities of a fully registered and licensed doctor, and/or to begin training for specialist medical practice.

When applying to join the register?

Check as soon as possible when you should apply for registration, and take care of the time needed to collect all documents and obtain registration. For example, students can commonly apply for provisional registration with a licence to practise up to three months in advance of the date when his F1 post will start.
